Pride.

The Bible considers Leviathan to be the "proudest" creature out of all creatures. It's also considered the king of the beasts (see Job 41).

Pride is deadly. God resists the proud (James 4:6). Pride does not allow you to see yourself. It does not allow you to see the sin in your life. Pride says, "I'm good. I have no fault." It makes you feel like you're better off than you actually are. Listen, in this season (more than ever), God is looking for those who will humble themselves before Him. If Job, who was considered righteous and undeserving of all the hell he went through, had to humble himself before God, how much more us?

Pride goes before destruction (Proverbs 16:18). Pride looks like knowing you're wrong about something but refusing to repent in order to protect your ego. Let's take Ahab for example, he despised Prophet Michaiah because he always "prophesied against him". He knew that Michaiah was going to tell him the Word of the Lord. He already had his mind made up in what he wanted to do, so hearing something contrary wasn't going to sit right with him (see 1 Kings 22 for reference). Michaiah told Ahab that if he went to attack Ramoth Gilead, he was going to die. But because Ahab was so prideful, he rebelled against the Word of the Lord and died.

See, pride wasn't just an "Ahab thing" or a "Job thing". Several people in the scriptures dealt with pride. The military leaders and all the people asked Jeremiah to find out from God if He wanted them to stay in Judah or go back to Egypt.

(Jeremiah 42:6)

They added. Jeremiah sought the Lord, and this was His response: "‘Stay here in this land. If you do, I will build you up and not tear you down; I will plant you and not uproot you. For I am sorry about all the punishment I have had to bring upon you (Jeremiah 42:10)". There was more that the Lord said but essentially, His response was: don't go to Egypt. Stay in Judah. Now this was their response:

"When Jeremiah had finished giving this message from the Lord their God to all the people, Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah and all the other proud men said to Jeremiah, “You lie! The Lord our God hasn’t forbidden us to go to Egypt! Baruch son of Neriah has convinced you to say this, because he wants us to stay here and be killed by the Babylonians or be carried off into exile.”

(Jeremiah 43:1-3)

Guys..this was the SAME group of people that told Jeremiah that they would obey God whether they liked His response or not. Even though they confessed their loyalty to God with their mouth, they already decided what they were going to do in their heart. This, my friends, is PRIDE. Doing what you want to do when you know the will of the Lord, yeah, that's pride. In a way you're telling God: "thank you for the suggestion but my way is better".

I know this all too well because this is something I've dealt with and still check my heart about till this day. I'll end with this: pride is a sin, and it ultimately separates us from God. So, if you don't sense the nearness of God, ask yourself if you have pride in your heart.
